Affirming therapy for queer, trans, and nonbinary adults in Denver

LGBTQ Therapist in Denver

I’m Briana Johnson, LPC, LAC — a queer therapist in Denver offering LGBTQ-affirming therapy for adults of all genders and identities.

You deserve a space where you don’t have to explain yourself, defend your identity, or worry about being misgendered. Whether you’re working through trauma, navigating relationships, or simply want therapy where your identity is affirmed, I’m here to help.

You get to be all of yourself here.

What You Can Expect from LGBTQ Therapy in Denver

Queer and trans-affirming therapy in Denver with Briana Johnson, LPC, LAC

Many of my clients come to therapy wanting:

  • A safe place to process their identity without judgment

  • Support in navigating family, partners, or community dynamics

  • Help healing trauma while being fully seen as who they are

  • A space where their sexuality or gender is respected — or simply a non-issue

Being queer or trans doesn’t have to be the only focus of therapy. Sometimes you just want to work on life stress, work issues, or relationships in a space where you don’t have to hide any part of yourself.

When Being Yourself Didn’t Feel Safe

For many LGBTQ+ people, therapy isn't only about identity. It's also about the impact of experiences that came with being different.

Rejection from family, bullying, exclusion, religious trauma, discrimination, hiding parts of yourself, or feeling unsafe being fully seen can leave lasting effects on self-trust, relationships, and the nervous system.

These experiences can be traumatic even when there was no single defining event.

You may find yourself second-guessing your instincts, struggling to take up space, feeling responsible for other people's comfort, or having difficulty trusting that you'll be accepted as your full self.

Together, we can work to heal those wounds while helping you build a life that feels more authentic, connected, and grounded.

My Approach to LGBTQ Therapy in Denver

If you’re wondering how this straight- and cis-passing white woman can help — that’s fair! I’m a queer woman who realized I was queer while studying to become a therapist in seminary, and I know what it’s like to question where you belong: feeling othered or rejected for who you are in some spaces while feeling “not queer enough” in others.

I began my clinical journey over a decade ago at the Gender Identity Center of Colorado, working with transgender adults. Since then, I’ve supported clients across outpatient, residential, and intensive treatment settings, focusing on LGBTQ therapy in Denver.

My approach is active and collaborative: I reflect back what I hear, ask questions that help you clarify, and walk alongside you as you imagine new ways of living.

To me, queerness is possibility — sacred, creative, and bold. Therapy is where you can bring all parts of yourself, heal old wounds, and reimagine what thriving looks like.

FAQ

  • I work with LGBTQ professionals in therapy on issues related to relationships, career/work, past trauma, identity, sex, etc. Our work can focus on your identities specifically or just provide a safe space for you to address other needs.

  • It’s awesome that you know what you need right now! Finding the right fit in therapy is paramount. If you know you’d like to work with a trans therapist, for example, I’d love to find you a referral to someone who holds that identity.

  • YES. I work predominantly with transgender and non-binary folks. We know that not every trans person fits the dominant narrative of experiencing gender dysphoria and desiring medical transition. We tailor our work to you and what you want, whatever that is. You get to determine your identity, your experience, and your journey for yourself.
